This book is a young adult classic that can be found in many school libraries. In my opinion, it is a classic for a reason and is a great read! Brian is on a small plane travelling to see his dad for the summer when the pilot has a heart attack. Brian’s plane goes down in the Canadian wilderness and he is the lone survivor. Using only his hatchet, his brain, and whatever he can find in the forest, Brian must learn to survive. Part survival book, part coming-of-age novel, this story is sure to captivate middle school readers. I would highly recommend it.
Age range: Grade 6 – 8
Themes: survival, animals, coming-of-age, identity, resilience.
Warnings: The book does discuss divorce and portrays a heart attack and a plane crash. Take this into consideration when choosing this book.
